"Monumento aos Discoveries" is a monument built in 1960, on the bank of the river, in Belem, Lisbon, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. It was commissioned by the Salazar regime, is 52 meters high and celebrated sailors, royal patrons and all who participated in the development of the Age of Discovery. The authors of the book were the architect José Angelo Cottinelli Telmo and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida. The monument has the shape of a ship with the Portuguese coat of arms on the sides and the sword of the Dynasty of Avis on the entry. Henry the Navigator ala chef stands in the bow with a caravel in his hands. In both descendents rows on each side of the monument, are statues of Portuguese heroes strongly associated with discoveries and famous sailors, cartographers and kings.
